In the 2022/23 and 2023/24 seasons, Yeonjoo Katharina Jang was a member of the Opera Studio at the Hamburg State Opera, where she performed a wide range of roles. These included Ciboulette in Hahn’s Ciboulette, Barbarina in Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro, Giannetta in Donizetti’s L’elisir d’amore, Thibault in Verdi’s Don Carlos, Contessa di Ceprano and Paggio in Verdi’s Rigoletto, Taumännchen in Humperdinck’s Hänsel und Gretel, Lucienne in Korngold’s Die tote Stadt, Jano in Janáček’s Jenůfa, and EOA in Andrew Norman’s A Trip to the Moon, which had its German premiere. During this time, she collaborated with esteemed conductors such as Paolo Arrivabeni, Mark Wigglesworth, Leo Hussain, and Yoel Gamzou, further enriching her artistic journey.
She began her musical education at Seoul National University in her native South Korea before continuing her studies at the Franz Liszt University of Music Weimar in Germany, where she was awarded a DAAD scholarship. During her academic career, she won first prize at the Piero Boni International Singing Competition and second prize at the Anton Rubinstein International Music Competition. After graduating in 2020, she made her European debut as Olympia in Offenbach’s Les Contes d’Hoffmann at the Deutsches Nationaltheater Weimar under the baton of Stefan Lano.
Her repertoire includes additional roles such as Susanna in Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro, Königin der Nacht, and Erste Dame in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte. Beyond her operatic achievements, she is a concert singer, frequently performing as a soloist in sacred works such as J. S. Bach’s solo cantata, Haydn’s The Creation, Mozart’s Mass in C Minor and Requiem, and Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle.
In 2024/25 season, Yeonjoo Katharina makes a role debut as Gilda in Verdi’s Rigoletto at the Landestheater Neustrelitz. She also returns to the Hamburg State Opera, where she sings Papagena in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte and Blumenmädchen in Wagner’s Parsifal. She further extends her reach as a concert singer, performing with the Orquestra Simfònica de les Illes Balears at Castell de Bellver in Mallorca and with the Belgrade Chamber Orchestra in the Grosser Saal of the Elbphilharmonie.
